In this post, I have simply listed all of the domain extensions I can find, and what they are short for.

Here is the list of internet domain extensions:

Top Level Domains

gTLD Domain Extension Meaning Notes

.aero	air-transport industry	Must verify eligibility for registration; only those in various categories of air-travel-related entities may register.
.asia	Asia-Pacific region	This is a TLD for companies, organizations, and individuals based in the region of Asia, Australia, and the Pacific.
.biz	business	This is an open TLD; any person or entity is permitted to register; however, registrations may be challenged later if they are not by commercial entities in accordance with the domain’s charter.
.cat	Catalan	This is a TLD for websites in the Catalan language or related to Catalan culture.
.com	commercial	This is an open TLD; any person or entity is permitted to register.

.coop	cooperatives	The .coop TLD is limited to cooperatives as defined by the Rochdale Principles.
.edu	educational	The .edu TLD is limited to institutions of learning (nearly all universally in the U.S. and increasingly overseas, e.g., Australia and China), such as 2 and 4-year colleges and universities.
.gov	governmental	The .gov TLD is limited to U.S. governmental entities and agencies (mostly but not exclusively federal).
.info	information	This is an open TLD; any person or entity is permitted to register.
.int	international organizations	The .int TLD is strictly limited to organizations, offices, and programs which are endorsed by a treaty between two or more nations.
.jobs	companies	The .jobs TLD is designed to be added after the names of established companies with jobs to advertise. At this time, owners of a “company.jobs” domain are not permitted to post jobs of third party employers.
.mil	U.S. military	The .mil TLD is limited to use by the U.S. military.
.mobi	mobile devices	Must be used for mobile-compatible sites in accordance with standards.
.museum	museums	Must be verified as a legitimate museum.
.name	individuals, by name	This is an open TLD; any person or entity is permitted to register; however, registrations may be challenged later if they are not by individuals (or the owners of fictional characters) in accordance with the domain’s charter.
.net	network	This is an open TLD; any person or entity is permitted to register.
.org	organization	This is an open TLD; any person or entity is permitted to register.
.pro	professions	Currently, .pro is reserved for licensed or certified lawyers, accountants, physicians and engineers in France, Canada, UK and the U.S. A professional seeking to register a .pro domain must provide their registrar with the appropriate credentials.
.tel	Internet communication services
.travel	travel and tourism industry related sites	Must be verified as a legitimate travel-related entity.

However, these top level domain extensions aren’t always used for what they are meant for. People usually stick to the normal .com, but if it is occupied, then these extensions can be a great alternative.

In addition to that, many of the really specialized ones tend to get better rankings in the search engines, as the domain extensions are harder to obtain – Which tells the search engines that only serious people are allowed to use a certain domain extension. (For example the .pro – Which has to be a “proffessional”)

(Thanks to wikipedia.org for much of the information)

Whenever you start a new website, you should never have hosting and domain name on the same account.
This is definately the easiest, but if you find a good hosting company, they usually charge a lot more than a domain registrar for a domain name.

And the same goes for domains.
Domain registrars are usually best at registering domains, and it’s always the cheapest. However, if you buy their hosting, you usually won’t get as many features that you would have gotten from a hosting company, for the same price.

But many (Actually most) people do this, and pay more than the other “smart ones”.
And this is especially important if you have more websites. I have 15 websites, and they are all on my “BabyCroc” Hostgator account.

This saves me a lot. So if you plan on making money online or anything similar, you need to reduce your costs to a maximum, to have the highest ROI. (Return On Investment)

Anyways, here is how you do it:

1. Get yourself a hosting account that supports more than one website. ( A Reseller account, or anything similar to a “BabyCroc” account at hostgator)
2. Register your domain name. Preferably a .com, .org, .net, or the extension for your country. You can do so at domain registrar 1and1’s website.
3. Go to your hostgator control panel and click “Addon Domains”. Fill out the required fields.

Here’s a screenshot with description: CLICK HERE TO SEE THE IMAGE WITH DESCRIPTIONS

4. Find your nameservers by looking at the bottom-left panel in your hostgator account. ( You also got these by email when you registered your hosting account.)
5. Choose “Transfer domain”, “change DNS settings” or anything similar depending on your domain registrar. This will take you to a screen that shows up some DNS settings/Name servers. (DNS is short for Domain Name System)

It will in most cases give you the option to fill out 2-10 fields, whereas only 1 is nessecary. I always fill in both of my hostgator domain servers.
6. Now all you need to do is to wait for approximately 48 hours to be able to use your hostgator account with your new domain!

*Note! The index of your new domain is located in the public_html folder, with the name you gave it. This is where you put your website files.

There are a lot of domain extensions these days, but probably the most common one, is of course the legendary dot com.

Over 70% of all domain names, are dot com’s, so people naturally try .com for domains they aren’t 100% sure of, if it’s international.

The other 2 most common domain extensions, are dot net, and dot org.

These are all domain extensions that can be registered by anyone. – Although .com are meant for “commercial” websites, .net are meant for websites, and .org really are only for non-organizations.
But hey? – Is domainextensions.org an organization? No way! Non-profit? – Take a guess…

So don’t worry, if your dot com is not availiable, get .net or .org.

If none of them are availiable as well, check out the useful prefixes you might include over here: Domain prefixes

Other quite common domain extensions are:

.info – For info-based websites. ( We don’t like these, as they look kind of bad, as well as they tend to rank lower in the search engines.) – Read more about search engine optimization here: The iMarketingBlog

.name – This is used for private persions only, and many people like to have an email with their name. It’s also probably the cheapest one. – But rank worse as well.

.biz – This is meant to be used for online businesses, but online businesses usually try to get a .com for branding purposes, as well as it looks better.

.Ws – Website. This can really be used for anything. We think it will be a lot more popular in the future, you can find out why over at: FreedomWS Or watch the film clip here:(Recommended) Dot WS Filmclip.

If you plan on profiting on this one we would also recommend taking a visit to profitsystems.ws.

Now go get your domain!

- Cheapest domain names at: 1and1 ( Hosting isn’t that good though)

- Hands up best webhosting at: Hostgator

What is a domain prefix you might ask? – Well that my friend, is easy.

A domain prefix is something you add at the beginning of your domain name, if you don’t get the one you want.

The most common ones are “i” and “e”. “E” stands for “Electronic”, and “I” stands for “Internet”.

For example “imarketingblog.org“. As you can see here, the name imarketingblog.com was taken as well, so the owner(We) decided to use dot org instead. ( So it’s really internetmarketingblog.org, but imarketingblog really does sound way cooler)

This can also be used for branding purposes as well, like mentioned above.

Here is a list of other domain name prefixes you might use to get a domain similar to the one you want:

the
best
super
ultra
all
cyber
simply
free
1st
go
come

*Note

Some of these domain prefixes might seem silly, depending on your domain name, but others might just do the trick for you! – So ask around, and take a look to see if any of them fits.

A domain suffix list will also be availiable soon.
